The story of Jamila Jennifer Douglas Onyejekwe shows how one woman can make a difference in the fight against cancer. Jamila is one of the truly inspirational women in Ghana that has used her experience and knowledge to make a difference to the lives of so many families that have been affected by cancer. Jamila is 38 years old and lost her own husband to this tragic illness 2 years ago. They have two children who are now 8 and 10. Jamila’s husband was a respected member of their local community and owned his own business, a taxi company which served the town where they lived.

After her husband had passed away, Jamila decided to pass her experiences and knowledge on to other families who were dealing with cancer. The first thing she did was begin to raise money for the hospital where her husband had died. Knowing that they were seriously under funded, Jamila went to local businesses to kickstart her campaign. She frequently appeared on the local radio, talking of the time she spent caring for her husband and what the hospital and its staff meant for them. It wasn’t long before she was able to present the hospital with a large cheque to go towards purchasing valuable equipment and medicines.
Since then Jamila has continued her fundraising efforts and now supports a number of health charities in her area. She frequently goes to visit families that are going through the same thing that she had done. She gives advice on how to deal with the everyday problems when you have members of your family that are suffering from cancer. Jamila Jennifer Douglas Onyejekwe still continues to appear on the local radio and in the newspapers, using it as a platform to improve the health care facilities in Ghana and change people’s lives.
